  • Why Am I Breaking Out THERE?!?! - Answers to acne and breakouts on forehead, cheeks, chin & neck

    On a daily basis, I meet and treat the beautiful faces of women and men of all ages and ethnicity.  The NUMBER ONE question I get - "Why am I breaking out THERE?!".  Yes ladies and gents, I dont care how genetically blessed you are in the skin department, how many salads you eat, how many facials you get, a big ugly pimple (or lots o pimples) will eventually grace your lovely face.  Im here to educate you on why, and how to help...

    Please meet my lovely model for the day:

    I think she looks like a Bianca...or a Svetlana...something very bitchy and fabulous.  In any case, she will be your guide to the zones of our face where breakouts occur.  Keep in mind that there are a million outside forces that can clog and pollute your pores - makeup, smoke, product, etc., but this is all about whats happening internally.

    Zones 1, 2 & 3 - Your Forehead.  Ugh, probably one of the worst and most unsightly areas to have a pimple. Its just right there, waving at everyone HELLO!!  This area relates directly to your liver, bladder and digestive system so its aggrevated most by - you guessed it - DIET. Especially if youre not drinking enough water. Its also greatly effected by alcohol consumption, rich or unhealthy foods, or even a food allergy (lactose intolerance is a big one).So if youre having trouble in this area - ditch the shit food, ease up on the partying and flush with good old H2O.  If that doesnt work, you might want to get tested for food allergies.

    Zones 4 & 10 - Ears. Funny place for a pimple, but this also goes for redness, inflamation, heat and sensitivity - which go hand in hand with breakouts.  This area is closely related to your kidneys so you might be stressing them out. Drink tons of water to flush them and cut down on the caffeine and alcohol. 

    Zones 5 & 9 - Cheeks! How annoying is a zit on your cheek? Stresses you out right? Well stoppit because thats exactly why youre breaking out there - stress. Internal stress, allergies, smoking, and you know, life in general. So take a chill pill and get a nice relaxing facial.

    Zones 6 & 8 - Eyes. Got dark circles? This area is related directly to the kidneys so although the darkness might be hereditary, they are made worse by dehydration and poor elimination.  Drink more water and get things moving people!

    Zone 7 - Nose.  Diet can cause breakouts but a very red nose can also be related to high blood pressure.  Breakouts around your upper lip is usually product - lipstick, lip balm, a fresh wax followed buy touching your skin with dirty hands.

    Zones 11,12,13 & 14 - Chin, Jawline & Neck.  Everyones favorite.  If you are a "period breakout" girl you know what I mean.  Breakouts on your chin SUCK. They hurt, everything turns red, no amount of cover up will ever be enough. What can we do for this area? Unfortunately, this is the "hormone zone" and if you dont breakout here at least once a month you are incredibly lucky.  The best thing you can do is have this area "zapped" with the high frequency machine during a facial and/or treat it with a good at home sulfur mask.  I use a sulfur srub/mask combo a few days before my period, just apply and let it sit while I shower or watch TV for 20-30 mins.  This really helps to kill the bacteria forming under the surface before it gets a chance to even come up for air. If you tend to only get one or two during your cycle, this might help to eliminate the undergrounders all together.

  • Get Glowing In a Pinch - Quick Fix Products for Super Dry/Dehydrated Skin

    First off- WTF is with this weather?! I dont care where you live, its out of control.  Im having to come to terms with the fact that us Californians just dont have winters anymore.  I realize that I shouldnt be complaining and people all over the world would kill to live here and the rest of the country is frozen blah blah blah.... but I got really cute sweaters and new boots for Christmas that I cant even wear, ok?

    Anyhow, whether youre able to hit the beach in "Juneuary" or youre in a foot of snow, we all have one thing in common - our skin is like a desert.  I really cant remember being so freaking DRY in my life! All of my clients are calling for emergency facials because their skin is going crazy and asking what they can do to give it a daily drink of water.  There are a bunch of "home remedies" and about a million things on Pinterest that you can try or experiment with, but lets be real.... having good skin is a commitment and there comes a point when you need to bite the bullet and splurge on some quality products.  If you can only purchase a few, heres what I suggest as some staples in your morning/daytime rege....

    1. CLEANSE. Dry/Dehydrated skin needs the moisture of a good cream cleanser.  Even if you are oily or have problematic skin, you should have a nice gentle cleanser on hand to give your skin a rest once in a while.  Use it in the a.m. to refresh with some cool water.  My favorite is Bioelements Moisture Positive Cleanser - Its creamy, natural, and smells amazing, but most importantly it thoroughly cleans the gunk off your face without stripping it, leaving it cool and moist.  It runs about $35 for 6oz and is worth every penny.  I sell it in my spa or you can purchase at http://www.bioelements.com/moisture-positive-cleanser-products-2.php?page_id=517 

     

    2. TONE. A good toner that you can mist onto your skin will make your other products like serum and moisturizer work A MILLION times better.  Plus it adds extra moisture and it just feels really nice and refreshing.  My ABSOLUTE favorite for a quick glow is Epicuren Discovery Protien Mist Enzyme Toner.  I use 3 key Epicuren products every day and this is the first.  Its it so amazing, you can also use it alll over your entire body after the shower before you put on lotion and youre smooth as a baby's bottom.     3. MOISTURIZER W/ A KICK.  Yes you can use just a good moisturizer after the toner BUT, adding this little gem will seriously make it look like you just had a professional treatment.  I do this next step every day and people always comment on how pretty my skin is and even ask if Im pregnant because Im glllllowing. In the palm of your hand, mix the 3 of these and massage into face, neck & chest:

    Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream - Normal to Dry Skin (Dime Size).  You can use any BB cream but I LOVE the Garnier, it gives light coverage and a nice glow and is actually moisturizing (and its only like $13 at Target)

     

    I swear, even if you use your own cleanser, using the Toning Mist followed with the Moisturizer, Enzyme, and BB Cream mixed together, you will feel and look SOOO glowing and moisturized.  And its such a great base for a mineral makeup.  Make sure you let your face dry for a few minutes - the enzyme concentrate may seem a little oily but your skin will suck it up if you let it chill for a bit.  But the most important step to this whole thing....

    4. WATER.  Yes, Water.  Its practically free, people... and I guarantee youre not drinking enough of it.  In order to be properly hydrated you need to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces (i.e. if you weigh 120lbs you need to drink at least 60oz of water per day) and drink extra if you smoke, drink tea, alcohol, soda or eat chocolate.  Its not that hard, just do it. If you think its boring add some good shit - lemons, limes, strawberries, mangos -whatever, you get the point. You will notice a difference is the bottom line. 

     One more thing - I do not recommend using this on acneic or problematic skin.  The protien enzymes may cause breakouts or aggrevation.
